Story
Odeta wants a divorce. Male relatives from both sides meet to discuss the matter in accordance with Albanian customary law. In the end, the parties come to an agreement and vote against divorce.
In the Albanian community, divorce remains a taboo subject that is tainted with guilt and shame – but this affects women in particular. The decision to divorce is not in their hands, but is made exclusively by the male members of the family. My mother also had this experience when she tried to divorce my father in Switzerland.
In a closed room (huis-clos), PALËT deals with non-verbal communication and complex relationships of dependency in order to illustrate the silent imprisonment of the main character and her silent resistance. PALËT is dedicated to all women who rebel against the oppressive, traditional system in the Albanian community and free themselves from patriarchal shackles.
