Masterclass in Locarno with Ted Hope und Nicolas Steiner

«HOW STREAMING PLATFORMS ARE CHANGING THE GAME FOR INDEPENDENT CREATORS»

Saturday, 10 August 2024, BaseCamp Academy, Locarno

Marcy Goldberg discusses the impact of streaming platforms on the film business in general and independent filmmaking in particular with US producer Ted Hope and Swiss filmmaker Nicolas Steiner. How are these relatively new media changing the way stories are developed, produced, marketed and consumed? Are certain formats favoured? And what can we expect in the near future? The masterclass also aims to shed light on how these changes are received by audiences and the extent to which they create space for new voices and more diversity in the film world.

The masterclass is for attendees of Locarno BaseCamp Academy. Launched in 2019, the project offers an opportunity to young filmmakers from all over the world to immerse themselves in the Locarno Film Festival for eleven days and make new contacts in the industry. Under the title “In Conversation We Trust”, this year’s edition of the programme brings together 200 up-and-coming international talents. The filmmakers supported by the Migros Culture Percentage Story Lab, the story lab participants, have the opportunity to be part of the programme every year.

Speakers

Ted Hope: US producer Ted Hope can look back on a long career as a studio manager with extensive industry experience. As a popular guest of Locarno Film Festival, he is happy to share his diverse experiences with the audience – and is not afraid to offer critical perspectives.

Nicolas Steiner: the award-winning independent Swiss film author produced a documentary series for Netflix Germany in 2021. Together with Ted Hope and Marcy Goldberg, he will discuss the current and future state of streaming platforms and their influence on the film industry.

The BaseCamp Academy and Migros Culture Percentage Story Lab masterclass will once again be hosted by Swiss-Canadian film scholar and media consultant Marcy Goldberg this year.
